LAS VEGAS – The starting quarterback for undefeated UNLV dropped a bombshell on social media Tuesday, revealing that he will be sitting out the remainder of the season.
Matthew Sluka, the talented QB, announced that he will be utilizing his redshirt year instead of playing in any more games this season. In his statement, he mentioned, “I committed to UNLV based on certain representations that were made to me, which were not upheld after I enrolled. Despite discussions, it became clear that these commitments would not be fulfilled in the future. I wish my teammates the best of luck this season and hope for the continued success of the program.”
The senior has had an impressive season so far, completing 21 of 48 passes for 318 yards, including six touchdowns and only one interception. He has also showcased his running ability, rushing 39 times for 286 yards and a touchdown.
In a breathtaking 23-20 victory over Kansas on September 13, Sluka led the Rebels to a triumphant win with a remarkable performance. He orchestrated an 18-play, 75-yard drive that culminated in Kylin James scoring on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line with just 1:51 left in the game. Sluka’s heroic efforts were instrumental in securing the win, as he rushed for an outstanding 113 yards.
UNLV is now gearing up to face Fresno State in its Mountain West Conference opener this Saturday. Despite Sluka’s absence, the team remains optimistic about their performance.
Prior to joining UNLV, Sluka spent four years at Holy Cross, a Football Championship Subdivision program. He has left an indelible mark at Holy Cross, dominating the record books with impressive stats. Notably, he holds the record for rushing yards by an NCAA Division I quarterback after a stunning performance against Lafayette in 2023.
