SAN ANTONIO – The trial for Constantino Tristian-Coronado, accused of causing a fatal crash that resulted in the death of an unborn child, concluded on Tuesday with a verdict.
A jury found Coronado guilty of manslaughter with a deadly weapon, aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury, aggravated assault, and aggravated assault of a public servant. These charges stem from a tragic incident that occurred on the South Side in May 2021.
Prosecutors argued that Coronado was attempting to flee the scene of a minor collision he caused near South Zarzamora and Interstate 35 when he collided with another vehicle. The second vehicle had pulled over for an approaching ambulance with lights and sirens activated.
The force of the impact caused the driver of the second vehicle, April Levine, to veer into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision with an ambulance. Unfortunately, the unborn child she was carrying did not survive the crash, despite efforts to save him.
April Levine, her 1-year-old child, and the paramedics involved in the collision all sustained injuries as a result of the incident.
During the trial, defense lawyers argued that the crash was an accident and that Coronado had been hit in the initial collision. They claimed he was trying to turn around and return to the scene at the time of the tragic events.
The sentencing phase for Constantino Tristian-Coronado is set to begin on Wednesday morning.
