San Francisco 49ers’ Christian McCaffrey Seeks Specialist in Germany for Achilles Injury
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – San Francisco 49ers All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey has traveled to Germany to consult with a specialist regarding his Achilles tendinitis, as confirmed by Coach Kyle Shanahan. McCaffrey has been dealing with this issue since early in training camp, which led to him being placed on injured reserve at the beginning of the season.
Shanahan expressed hope that the specialist in Germany can help McCaffrey in his recovery process. McCaffrey sustained the injury early in training camp, missed four weeks of practice, and was a late scratch for the season opener against the Jets. He was placed on injured reserve on September 14 after experiencing pain in his Achilles tendon following a practice.
Although McCaffrey is eligible to return for a Week 6 game at Seattle, his playing status remains uncertain. He led the NFL last season in yards from scrimmage and touchdowns, earning him the AP Offensive Player of the Year award. Despite a history of injuries during his time with the Carolina Panthers, McCaffrey had been healthy for the past two seasons.
The 49ers have faced multiple injury setbacks this season, with star players like Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Javon Hargrave missing time. Hargrave’s triceps injury is likely season-ending and will require surgery, further complicating the team’s defensive lineup.
On a positive note, quarterback Brock Purdy’s recent MRI came back clean, and he is listed as day-to-day. The team is also optimistic about Kittle’s return after missing a game due to a hamstring injury.
As the season progresses, the 49ers are hopeful for the return of linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who is expected to recover from an Achilles tendon injury sustained in the Super Bowl.
