Tragedy Strikes Iranian Coal Mine: 30 Miners Killed in Methane Explosion
In a devastating incident, a methane leak triggered an explosion at a coal mine in Tabas, located in eastern Iran. The blast resulted in the tragic deaths of at least 30 miners, with 17 others sustaining injuries and an additional 24 miners feared to be trapped inside.
The coal mine, situated approximately 540 kilometers southeast of Tehran, was the site of the deadly event. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the area following the explosion that occurred late on Saturday. At the time of the blast, around 70 individuals were working in the mine, with 24 individuals now believed to be trapped.
Provincial Governor Mohammad Javad Qenaat confirmed the tragic toll, stating that 30 miners had lost their lives, and 17 others had been injured in the incident.
As the nation reels from the tragedy, President Masoud Pezeshkian has directed all resources towards the rescue efforts for those trapped in the mine and providing support to their families. An investigation into the cause of the explosion has been initiated.
It is a grim reminder of the dangers faced by miners in Iran, where lax safety standards and inadequate emergency services in mining areas have often led to tragic incidents. This is not the first disaster to strike Iran’s mining industry, with past incidents claiming numerous lives.
Iran, known for its oil production, also has a significant coal mining sector. The country imports a large portion of its coal for consumption in industries such as steel mills, highlighting the importance of ensuring mining safety and regulations.
