It took Florian Wirtz less than five minutes to score his first Champions League goal on his debut in Europe’s elite club competition.
Wirtz, touted as one of the best young players in the world, also netted another as Bayer Leverkusen secured a 4-0 win at Feyenoord on Thursday.
After losing in the Europa League final in May, Leverkusen bounced back strongly this season, winning the Bundesliga title and the German Cup.
In a revamped Champions League format, Leverkusen’s win and Benfica’s 2-1 victory at Red Star Belgrade set the tone for the new competitive structure.
The new format includes all 36 teams playing eight different opponents through January, with a single league table determining the knockout phase qualifiers.
