Typhoon Bebinca Hits China

BEIJING – Two people lost their lives in China’s eastern Jiangsu province as Typhoon Bebinca struck, bringing torrential rains and powerful winds before weakening into a tropical storm, state media reported on Tuesday.

According to state broadcaster CCTV, two individuals in Zhoushi Town were tragically hit by a falling high-voltage power line and electrocuted on Monday.

These are the only known fatalities caused by Typhoon Bebinca, which swept over Shanghai and neighboring provinces, flooding roads and knocking out power to some homes.

In addition to the loss of lives, one person on Shanghai’s Chongming Island was injured by a falling tree.

Over 414,000 individuals were evacuated in anticipation of the storm, with schools closed and transportation services suspended. Residents were advised to remain indoors as the typhoon hit the region.

Although described as the strongest typhoon to hit Shanghai since 1949, Bebinca weakened as it moved inland and eventually downgraded to a tropical storm on Tuesday morning.

Weather authorities warned of heavy rainfall in several provinces, with up to 20 centimeters expected in some areas through Wednesday afternoon.

By Monday evening, roads in Shanghai were cleared and traffic had returned to normal. The power supply was fully restored by midnight on Tuesday.
