Historic Moment at Oracle Park as Giants’ Heliot Ramos Hits Splash Homer
San Francisco – In a nail-biting 4-3 loss to the San Diego Padres, the Giants’ Heliot Ramos made history by becoming the first right-handed batter in Oracle Park’s 25-season history to hit a Splash Homer into McCovey Cove.
Ramos launched his 394-foot drive into the water beyond the right field wall in the ninth inning. He achieved this feat on a full-count 100.4 mph fastball from Padres’ closer Robert Suarez, marking the 168th Splash Hit overall and the 105th by the Giants.
The 25-year-old All-Star outfielder, Ramos, spoke about his accomplishment, stating that while he had never reached the water during batting practice, he was aware that no right-handed batter had done it before. He described the moment as something special and unique.
Despite a recent slump, Ramos entered the game hitting .158 over his prior 15 games. The Splash Homer was clocked at 103.8 mph off the bat, according to MLB Statcast.
Reflecting on his performance, Ramos talked about his mindset and determination, emphasizing the importance of staying focused and ready for the challenge.
Manager Bob Melvin praised Ramos for his clutch homer, describing it as a significant moment in the game that tied the score against a tough opponent.
The Giants’ starting pitcher, Landen Roupp, lauded Ramos’ achievement, calling it unreal and impressive.
Having accomplished this milestone on Roberto Clemente Day and a special day dedicated to the late Hall of Famer Orlando Cepeda, Ramos expressed his gratitude for being a part of Giants’ history. He acknowledged the team’s rich legacy and was honored to add his name to the record books.
Ramos is eager to negotiate to retrieve the ball and sees this achievement as a crowning moment in his career. Despite the loss, he considers the day as a special and meaningful one for him personally.
