NATO Chief Says Ukraine Has Right to Strike Inside Russia
The head of NATO’s military committee reaffirmed Ukraine’s legal and military right to strike deep inside Russia for combat advantage. This stance, supported by several U.S. allies, contrasts with the Biden administration’s reluctance to allow Kyiv to use American-made weapons for such actions.
Admiral Rob Bauer emphasized that every nation attacked has the right to defend itself, even beyond its borders, a sentiment echoed by other military leaders at the annual meeting. Lt. Gen. Karel Řehka of the Czech Armed Forces emphasized that Ukrainians should decide how to utilize the weapons provided to them.
The discussion reflects the ongoing debate within the international community over Ukraine’s use of long-range weapons against Russia. President Joe Biden, after meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is considering approving the use of British Storm Shadow missiles by Ukraine.
While the issue of U.S. restrictions on Ukrainian weapons was not clearly addressed at the NATO meeting, the European allies remain steadfast in their support for Ukraine, fearing potential Russian aggression.
Despite the U.S. policy preventing certain long-range strikes, military leaders are focused on empowering Ukraine with existing capabilities to counter Russian advances. The use of drones and locally-produced armaments has proven effective in the conflict.
The debate over weapon restrictions highlights the complex dynamics of international military support and the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
