Inspiring Ballerina Michaela DePrince Dies at 29

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The world of ballet is mourning the loss of legendary dancer Michaela Mabinty DePrince, who passed away at the age of 29. Born in war-torn Sierra Leone, DePrince’s journey from an orphanage to the world stage has inspired countless individuals.

Her family shared a statement on her social media accounts, expressing their sorrow and celebrating DePrince’s incredible achievements. From her challenging early years in Africa to her stellar performances around the globe, she defied all odds to realize her dreams.

A specific cause of death was not disclosed, but her impact on the world of ballet is undeniable. Adopted by an American couple, DePrince quickly rose to fame, appearing in a documentary and gracing the stage of “Dancing With the Stars.”

Following her training at prestigious institutions like the American Ballet Theatre, DePrince went on to become a principal dancer at the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Her talent led her to the Netherlands and eventually back to the U.S. with the Boston Ballet in 2021, leaving a lasting legacy in each company.

The Boston Ballet paid tribute to DePrince, emphasizing her exceptional talent and the positive influence she had on those around her. Her story, detailed in her memoir “Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina,” continues to inspire aspiring dancers worldwide.

DePrince faced obstacles due to a skin pigmentation disorder during her time in the orphanage, where she endured mistreatment. Despite these challenges, she held onto a dream inspired by a magazine photo that sparked her passion for ballet.

Recognized for her achievements and resilience, DePrince’s family encourages support for War Child, an organization she passionately advocated for. Donations in her memory will benefit children affected by armed conflict, a cause she held dear.

Michaela Mabinty DePrince leaves behind a legacy of strength, grace, and determination. Her impact on the world of dance and her commitment to helping others will be remembered for years to come.
