Exciting News from New York! Percival Everett’s “James,” a remarkable retelling of Mark Twain’s classic “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” has been nominated for a National Book Award in the fiction category. But that’s not all! The long list of nominees includes Rachel Kushner’s thrilling novel, “Creation Lake,” and Miranda July’s thought-provoking exploration of middle age, “All Fours.”
The National Book Foundation revealed the fiction nominees on Friday, following a week of announcements across various categories like fiction, nonfiction, poetry, young people’s literature, and books in translation. The judges will soon narrow down the list to five finalists by October 1, with the winners set to be revealed on November 20 during a prestigious dinner ceremony in Manhattan. This event will also include the presentation of honorary prizes to novelist Barbara Kingsolver and publisher-activist Paul Coates.
Among the fiction nominees are two captivating story collections, Pemi Aguda’s “Ghostroots” and Tony Tulathimutte’s “Rejection,” as well as three impressive debut novels: Kaveh Akbar’s “Martyr!,” Karla Cornejo Villavicencio’s “Catalina,” and Sam Sax’s “Yr Dead,” which unfolds in part outside Trump Tower in Manhattan. Rounding out the list are Jessica Anthony’s “The Most” and Hisham Matar’s “My Friends.”
