Welcome to the Future: The Mexican Civil Rights Museum Coming to San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO – The Mexican American Civil Rights Institute (MACRI) is gearing up to make history with the announcement of a “significant milestone” in the creation of the nation’s first Mexican Civil Rights Museum in San Antonio.
Be sure to tune in this Friday at 11 a.m. for the press conference where Mayor Ron Nirenberg, U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, MACRI leaders, and an architect from Ford Powell & Carson will discuss the exciting findings of a site feasibility study. You can watch it live in the video player above.
MACRI’s Executive Director Sarah Zenaida Gould shared in a LinkedIn post that the group had been in search of a consulting or architectural firm to conduct a feasibility study for the history museum. The proposed site is located along the corridor of West Commerce and Buena Vista Street, offering accessibility to local families, school children, and visiting tourists.
MACRI aims to create a national destination where visitors can learn about almost two centuries of Mexican American civil rights history. The decision on selecting a firm is expected by the end of July 2023, with an anticipated completion of the study by November 2023.
Back in October, MACRI celebrated the opening of its first visitor center, marking a significant step forward in the museum’s development. Established in 2019 in San Antonio, MACRI serves as a hub for Mexican American civil rights leadership and organizations, formerly known as the National Institute of Mexican American History of Civil Rights.
