Welcome to Apple’s “Glowtime” Event Recap
Cupertino, Calif. – Apple made a significant shift towards artificial intelligence at its highly anticipated iPhone 16 unveiling, introducing a variety of new features coming with the next operating system update. While the new iPhone lineup stole the spotlight at Monday’s event, Apple also shared updates on its smartwatch and AirPods.
Here are the major highlights from Apple’s latest event.
Apple Intelligence
Apple’s artificial intelligence features are now bundled under the name Apple Intelligence, first introduced at the company’s developers conference back in June. These features include image search based on descriptions, custom emojis, email summaries, and enhanced notification prioritization. With this update, Siri will also receive improvements to better understand requests and interact with on-screen actions, aiming to make it more useful.
What sets Apple apart from competitors like Samsung and Google is its strong focus on privacy. Most AI functions will be processed on-device rather than on remote servers, ensuring enhanced data security and privacy protection for users.
The updates to Apple’s AI features will be available through a free software update to iOS 18, the operating system powering the new iPhone 16 lineup set to release from October through December.
iPhone 16 and the Camera Button
The iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max feature larger displays and the powerful A18 chip to support the new AI functions. Apple CEO Tim Cook emphasized that the iPhone 16 was designed with Apple Intelligence in mind.
Notable physical changes include a dedicated camera-control button on the iPhone 16 lineup, enabling users to quickly capture photos, preview shots, or start video recording with ease. The button also integrates Visual Intelligence, allowing the phone to identify subjects in photos automatically.
The iPhone 16 models will start shipping on September 20, with prices ranging from $799 to $1,199.
Apple Watch Upgrades
The Apple Watch Series 10 introduces a larger and brighter OLED display, ideal for improved visibility at various angles. A significant focus was placed on the watch’s ability to detect signs of sleep apnea, enhancing its health monitoring capabilities.
For the first time, the Series 10 watch is available in a titanium finish, catering to users looking for a more robust and lightweight alternative to traditional materials.
The Apple Watch Series 10 starts at $399 and will be released on September 20.
AirPods Lean Towards Listening
The new AirPods 4 series boasts an upgraded chip for superior audio quality and improved active noise cancellation. Additionally, users can now locate lost earbuds through the Find My app, which plays a sound to aid in locating them.
In a health-oriented update, the AirPods Pro 2 will function as over-the-counter hearing aids, offering a clinical-grade hearing test, and measures to protect hearing. The AirPod 4 is priced at $129, with the noise-canceling variant at $179, both available on September 20.
