SAN ANTONIO – When Hanna Zertuche recognized the need for volunteers at Harper’s Chapel Ministries on the West Side, little did she know that a year later, she would be a full-time staff member coordinating volunteers and programs at the organization.
“I love these kids more than anything. And, I love them as if they’re my own,” Zertuche expressed passionately.
Located just a block away from Lincoln Heights Courts, the church initiated an afterschool program to provide enrichment and reading tutoring for the children in the community. Starting with just a few kids a year ago, the program now serves around 40 kids from Monday to Wednesday.
While the community support remains strong, Zertuche emphasized the pressing need for volunteers.
“It’s such a blessing to be part of this. And I want more people to experience and benefit from the blessings that we have received,” she said. “Mentorship and love are what our kids need the most. Being present and invested in their lives can make a significant impact.”
Harper’s Chapel Ministries is calling out to retirees, counselors, and college students who are looking to volunteer or gain experience in programs serving inner cities. Visit harperscbc.com to join as a volunteer or click here to donate. Additionally, there is an Amazon Wish List for afterschool supplies.
The ministry is also a part of this year’s The Big Give SA, taking place from Sept. 11-18.
