The Future of Smart Streets: How Vehicle-to-Everything Technology is Revolutionizing Roadways

Ever wondered how to avoid red lights during rush hour in Utah’s largest city? The secret might be as simple as following a bus.

Transportation officials in Salt Lake City have implemented a cutting-edge system where radio transmitters inside commuter buses directly communicate with traffic signals, requesting extra green time as they approach. This innovative approach has significantly reduced congestion on these smart streets and is just a glimpse of the high-tech upgrades that could revolutionize roads not only in Utah but across the entire United States.

With a $20 million federal grant and a mission to “Connect the West,” the aim is to enable all vehicles in Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming to communicate with each other and roadside infrastructure about traffic conditions, accidents, hazards, and weather. This real-time information empowers drivers to make informed decisions, leading to safer and smoother journeys without relying on manual alerts or smartphone apps.

Blaine Leonard, a transportation technology engineer at the Utah Department of Transportation, highlights the potential of vehicles sharing data with each other and with road sensors, a concept known as Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X). The U.S. Department of Transportation recently unveiled a blueprint for the nationwide deployment of V2X projects to enhance road safety and efficiency.

One of the primary goals of V2X technology is to reduce roadway fatalities and injuries, with research suggesting that its implementation could prevent hundreds of thousands of crashes and save lives. These life-saving benefits drive advocates like Dan Langenkamp, who lost his wife in a road accident, to push for the rapid adoption of this transformative technology across the country.

While privacy concerns remain a hurdle, the focus is on ensuring data protection while leveraging V2X capabilities to enhance road safety. The federal blueprint sets ambitious targets for equipping signalized intersections with V2X technology, with Salt Lake City leading the way by surpassing initial milestones.

Moreover, the success of connected vehicle initiatives like Utah’s bus communication system highlights the tangible benefits of V2X technology in reducing congestion and improving traffic flow. These smart street implementations pave the way for a future where roads seamlessly interact with vehicles, creating safer and more efficient transportation networks nationwide.
