SAN DIEGO – Alex Morgan, one of the most iconic figures in women’s soccer, announced her retirement from professional soccer at the age of 35. The news came as a surprise to many, including her teammates at the San Diego Wave, who gave her a warm ovation at her retirement press conference.
Morgan, who is pregnant with her second child, will play her final match for the Wave against the North Carolina Courage at Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday. Despite her limited playing time, Morgan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lace up her boots one last time.
Morgan cited her family as the primary reason for her retirement, noting that she had originally planned to retire at the end of the season but decided to step away midseason due to her pregnancy.
Throughout her illustrious career, Morgan has been a trailblazer for women’s sports, both on and off the pitch. She plans to continue her advocacy work through the Alex Morgan Foundation and her involvement in the upcoming Unrivaled 3 on 3 women’s basketball league.
As Morgan prepares to bid farewell to professional soccer, she leaves behind a legacy of excellence, activism, and inspiration for future generations of athletes.
