Tragic Loss: Ugandan Olympic Athlete Rebecca Cheptegei Dies After Domestic Violence Attack
It’s with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Ugandan Olympic athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei, at the age of 33. Cheptegei tragically succumbed to her injuries after being attacked by her partner, leaving 80% of her body burned. She was receiving treatment at a Kenyan hospital where she eventually passed away.
The spokesperson at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Owen Menach, confirmed Cheptegei’s death, stating that all her organs had failed. The long-distance runner had been fully sedated since her admission to the hospital.
Just a month before the attack, Cheptegei had participated in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics, finishing in 44th place. The attack occurred following a dispute with her partner, Dickson Ndiema, who bought petrol, poured it on her, and set her ablaze. Ndiema also sustained burns and is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, Cheptegei’s parents revealed that their daughter had purchased land in Trans Nzoia to be closer to the county’s athletic training centers. Reports suggest that the couple had an argument over the land where Cheptegei’s house was built before the violent attack took place.
The Uganda Athletics Federation and Uganda Olympic Committee have both expressed their deep sorrow over Cheptegei’s passing, condemning domestic violence and calling for justice. The loss of Cheptegei, a talented athlete, has been described as senseless and cowardly by sports officials in Uganda.
Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Rebecca Cheptegei during this difficult time. May her soul rest in peace.
