Breaking News: Texas lawmakers call for DOJ investigation into civil rights violations against Latino election organizers.
U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro along with four other Democratic lawmakers have raised concerns regarding potential civil rights violations by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton against Latino election organizers and volunteers.
The lawmakers held a virtual press conference denouncing Paxton’s election integrity investigation, prompted by a recent legal action against the Bexar County Commissioners Court.
Paxton’s lawsuit aims to block a voter registration program on the grounds of potential election fraud, a move that has been met with criticism from fellow representatives such as U.S. Rep. Al Green and U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett.
The Democrats are calling for a Department of Justice investigation to ensure the protection of Latino voters’ rights and accessibility to the voting process.
Castro emphasized the importance of facilitating voter registration in Texas, a state with low voter registration rates due to stringent regulations.
