Exciting news for golf fans! Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are gearing up to take on LIV Golf stars Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a thrilling made-for-TV match in Las Vegas, as reported by Golfweek. This unique event marks the first time top players from each circuit will compete against each other outside of the majors.
Blake Smith, who manages Scheffler and Koepka for Hambric Sports, confirmed their participation and expressed their excitement to be part of this groundbreaking event.
Stay tuned for more details about the date and location of the match, set to take place in December. The foursome boasts an impressive collective total of 13 majors over the past decade, making this showdown even more compelling.
What sets this match apart is the union of players from the PGA Tour and the Saudi-backed LIV Golf, a rare occurrence outside of the majors and the Olympics.
The PGA Tour is currently in negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, the financial backer of LIV. While a deal is pending and subject to review, it has been confirmed that players competing with LIV will be ineligible for PGA Tour events for one year following their last appearance.
The match will be televised by TNT, adding to the excitement for fans. Rory McIlroy describes the event as a way to energize and entertain the audience—”We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again,” he said.
McIlroy, who was once critical of LIV, has played a key role in bringing both sides together. He is part of the committee engaged in negotiations with the Public Investment Fund.
Despite past disagreements, McIlroy believes it’s time to find common ground and move forward. He acknowledges the challenges but remains hopeful that a solution will be reached for the benefit of all involved.
According to Golfweek, players will receive an appearance fee for the match, but no prize money will be awarded.
