The Tragedy at Makala Central Prison in Kinshasa
The families of those who lost their lives in what authorities deemed an attempted jailbreak at Congo’s largest prison are seeking answers from the government while activists decry the inhumane conditions in the country’s overcrowded penitentiaries.
The incident, which occurred at the Makala Central Prison in the capital city of Kinshasa, resulted in the tragic death of 129 individuals. Justice Minister Constant Mutamba labeled it as a “premeditated act of sabotage” and vowed a strong response.
However, rights groups and opposition leaders are demanding an independent investigation, accusing the government of using excessive force and concealing the true death toll. Some sources suggest that more than 200 individuals may have perished.
The mother of Everixk Nzeu, a 25-year-old victim, shared how her son was detained without trial or conviction and tragically lost his life in the chaos of the jailbreak attempt.
The incident has shed light on the challenging conditions in Congolese prisons, particularly at Makala, which is currently severely overcrowded. This heartbreaking tragedy calls for immediate action and accountability from the authorities to ensure justice and respect for human rights.
