Blog Title: Navigating the New Restrictions on Library Books in Texas Public Schools
In 2023, Texas lawmakers passed HB 900, also known as the READER Act, imposing limitations on explicit and adult-related educational resources in public school libraries. This law mandates book vendors to rate materials, with school districts required to recall any books deemed explicit. While some districts are transparent about their book selections, others are facing scrutiny from concerned parents.
At a recent North East ISD board meeting, parents raised concerns about the oversight of library materials. Terri Sanchez, NEISD Director of Library Services, explained that the district works with vendors to provide professional reviews for books. However, due to the sheer volume of books, some outdated or questionable materials may still be on the shelves. Sanchez assured that they are constantly evaluating the collection to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
To promote transparency, NEISD offers a “Transparency in Libraries” tab on their website, allowing parents to voice concerns about specific books and monitor their child’s reading history. There is also an “Opt-out” form for parents wishing to restrict their child’s access to certain materials. Despite efforts to maintain a balanced collection, challenges arise, like the removal of “Black Boy Joy” from elementary schools due to objections.
Similarly, Northside ISD and SAISD have implemented processes to weed out inappropriate books from their libraries. Through a reconsideration process, Northside ISD removed three titles following parental requests. SAISD emphasizes the importance of professional reviews in book selection, having removed over 111,000 books due to school closures. These districts prioritize book relevancy, condition, redundancy, and loss in their weeding-out process.
In conclusion, amidst the evolving landscape of educational materials, Texas public schools are adapting to comply with new regulations while maintaining a diverse and engaging library collection. Parents are encouraged to engage with school librarians and administrators to address any concerns or questions regarding library books.
