LOS ANGELES – James Darren, a teen idol who helped ignite the 1960s surfing craze as a charismatic beach boy paired off with Sandra Dee in the hit film “Gidget,” passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
Darren died peacefully in his sleep at a Los Angeles hospital, as confirmed by his son Jim Moret.
Known for his role as Moondoggie in the 1959 film “Gidget,” Darren captured the hearts of young movie fans with his dark-haired surfer boy persona.
Throughout his career, Darren transitioned from acting to singing, eventually becoming a successful television director, working on popular series like “Beverly Hills 90210” and “Melrose Place.”
