Triathlon events at the Paralympic Games finally received approval on Monday, and Alexis Hanquinquant from France capitalized on the opportunity to defend his title and secure his country’s second gold medal of the day.
Hanquinquant, who is ranked No. 1 in the World Triathlon Para Rankings, triumphed in the men’s PTS4 class triathlon, finishing in 58 minutes, 1 second – almost three minutes ahead of his closest competitors.
Despite having his right leg amputated below the knee in 2013, Hanquinquant showcased exceptional athleticism in front of a roaring home crowd, making the victory even sweeter.
Jules Ribstein also claimed gold for France in the men’s PTS2 event earlier in the day, sparking emotional moments and celebrations among spectators.
In other categories, athletes from the United States showcased their prowess, with Hailey Danz, Grace Norman, and Chris Hammer securing gold medals in their respective triathlon events.
The competition had been postponed from Sunday due to concerns about water quality in the Seine River after heavy rains. Despite the delay, athletes put on a spectacular show for the enthusiastic crowd.
Another standout performer was Matt Stutzman, an American archer born without arms, who clinched a gold medal and set a new Paralympic record in his final Games appearance.
Stutzman’s remarkable achievement added to the excitement and emotion of the day, underscoring the incredible talent on display at the Paralympic Games.
