Trump halts hush money proceedings, sentencing by asking federal court to intervene

NEW YORK – Former President Donald Trump’s legal team made a bold move on Friday to halt proceedings in his New York hush money criminal case. They aim to postpone his upcoming sentencing indefinitely while they litigate to have a federal court intervene and potentially overturn his felony conviction.

Trump’s lawyers have penned a letter to the judge overseeing the case, asking for a hold on the decision scheduled for September 16th regarding Trump’s request to overturn the verdict and dismiss the indictment following the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity.

The legal team has also urged the trial judge to postpone Trump’s sentencing on September 18th indefinitely while the U.S. District Court in Manhattan reviews their request to transfer the case from state court to federal court.

Delaying the proceedings is deemed the “only appropriate course” as Trump’s lawyers seek to rectify what they see as violations of their client’s constitutional rights and the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling for ex-presidents.

If the case is moved to federal court, Trump’s lawyers plan to seek to have the verdict overturned and the case dismissed based on immunity grounds. They have also requested that sentencing be postponed until after the November election.

The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined to comment on the latest developments. Trump was convicted in May of multiple felony counts related to concealing hush money payments to Stormy Daniels. His legal team continues to leverage legal avenues to challenge the conviction.

Trump’s lawyers argue that prosecutors rushed to trial and presented evidence that should not have been allowed under the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling. This is not the first time they have sought to move the case to federal court based on presidential immunity concerns.

Legal battles continue as Trump fights to overturn his conviction and navigate the complex legal landscape surrounding ex-presidential immunity. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for Trump’s political future and legal standing.
