US forces prepared with ‘range of options’ for South China Sea threats, admiral says

The South China Sea has been a hotbed of contention in recent years, with China asserting its dominance over the region, much to the concern of neighboring countries. The United States, a longtime ally of the Philippines, has signaled its readiness to respond to acts of aggression in the disputed waters.

In a recent press conference in Baguio, U.S. Indo-Pacific Command chief Adm. Samuel Paparo stated that American forces have a range of options at their disposal to address China’s “gray-zone tactics” in the South China Sea. These tactics, such as water cannon fire and ship blockades, fall below the threshold of armed attack but still pose a threat to regional stability.

Paparo emphasized the importance of consultation with the Philippines before taking any action, as stipulated by the mutual defense treaty between the two nations. The admiral’s remarks come in the wake of escalating tensions between China and the Philippines, with both countries engaging in hostile encounters in the disputed waters.

Despite the challenging situation, Gen. Romero Brawner Jr., chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, expressed confidence in the country’s ability to defend itself. However, he acknowledged the possibility of seeking assistance from the United States if all other options were exhausted.

The U.S. military’s presence in the region has raised concerns in Beijing, particularly with the deployment of advanced missile systems to the Philippines. China has accused the Philippines of provoking the hostilities by encroaching on its territorial waters, a claim disputed by international law.

As the situation in the South China Sea remains tense, the collaboration between the U.S. and the Philippines in joint military exercises like Balikatan is seen as a show of strength against Chinese aggression. Both countries are committed to upholding regional security and maritime freedom in the face of mounting challenges.

Overall, the strategic partnership between the U.S. and the Philippines serves as a bulwark against destabilizing forces in the South China Sea. By standing shoulder to shoulder, these allies send a clear message to those who seek to undermine peace and security in the region.
