The Exciting New Champions League Format for 2024
GENEVA – Exciting changes are coming to the Champions League this season, with more teams, more games, and more prize money up for grabs.
UEFA will make the draw in Monaco on Thursday for the match schedule of the new single-standings league phase that replaces the traditional group stage.
The first new format since 2003 promises more excitement and competitiveness for Europe’s elite clubs, with changes to the number of teams, games, and prize money on offer.
There are now four more places in a 36-team lineup, with each team playing at least eight games compared to the previous six. Additionally, Champions League games will now be scheduled in January for the first time, with a significant increase in prize money to a minimum of 2.5 billion euros ($2.8 billion).
The new format aims to improve competitive balance and sporting interest, providing more meaningful matches throughout the competition.
With 144 total games in the new league phase, compared to 96 in the group stage last season, fans can expect more action and drama on the pitch.
In the final round, all 36 teams will play on the same Jan. 29 evening to determine the standings for the round of 16. Qualification is expected with an average of 7.6 points, equivalent to two wins and two draws, according to UEFA officials.
The road to agreeing on the new format was not without its challenges, with money being a driving force behind the changes. The European Club Association pushed for a more engaging format with stronger opponents to attract a wider audience and boost revenues.
The draw for the 36 teams will be done based on their UEFA club coefficient, ensuring an exciting and competitive lineup. The top eight teams will advance directly to the round of 16, while the rest will compete in a knockout playoff round in February.
With a billion-dollar prize money fund up for grabs, the stakes are higher than ever in the new Champions League format. Team revenues will be boosted by selling more games and increased sponsorship opportunities, making it a lucrative competition for all involved.
Don’t miss out on the action and tune in as Europe’s top clubs battle it out for glory in the revamped Champions League!
