Texas judge halts Biden program granting legal status to spouses of US citizens

Exciting News for Immigrant Spouses in Texas!

A federal judge in Texas has put a temporary pause on the Biden administration’s new protections that would allow immigrant spouses of U.S. citizens a path to citizenship. This decision comes after a lawsuit was filed by 16 states challenging the program, claiming it would encourage illegal immigration.

The program, announced by President Joe Biden in June, has been temporarily halted while the legal challenge is ongoing. The order puts the program on hold for at least two weeks.

This policy offers spouses of U.S. citizens without legal status a path to citizenship by applying for a green card and staying in the U.S. during the process, eliminating the need for years-long waits outside the country.

Despite the temporary pause, several families have already applied for the program and are waiting to see the outcome. Advocates are fighting for the rights of these families and pushing back against the legal challenges.

Karen Tumlin, the founder and director of Justice Action Center, emphasized the importance of not letting Texas dictate the fate of these families without considering their real-life circumstances.

The coalition of states opposing the program has accused the administration of bypassing Congress for political reasons.
