THE HAGUE – The Dutch data protection watchdog has made a bold move by slapping a €290 million fine on ride-hailing giant Uber. The reason behind this hefty fine is the alleged transfer of personal information of European drivers to the United States without adequate protection. Uber, on the other hand, has strongly opposed this decision, calling it flawed and unjustified, and has decided to appeal the ruling.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority has stated that Uber’s data transfers, which took place over a span of more than two years, represent a serious breach of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. This regulation emphasizes the implementation of technical and organizational measures to ensure the security and privacy of user data.
