Vice President Kamala Harris has hit a fundraising milestone, with her campaign announcing a total of $540 million raised for the upcoming election battle against former President Donald Trump. Since President Joe Biden endorsed Harris and ended his own campaign in July, supporters have been showing immense support by opening their wallets.
The Democratic National Convention in Chicago last week further boosted donations, especially after Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, accepted their nominations. Campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon revealed, “Just before Vice President Harris’ acceptance speech, we officially crossed the $500 million mark.” The fundraising continued to soar after her speech, marking their best hour since launch day.
Although Trump is also a strong fundraiser, Harris seems to be surpassing him with her month-old campaign. Trump reported raising $138.7 million in July, while Harris exceeded this amount in the first week of her campaign launch. With $327 million in cash on hand at the start of August, Harris is gearing up for a fierce battle in the coming months.
The contributions to the Harris campaign came from various sources, including Harris for President, the Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees. A significant portion of these donations during convention week were from first-time contributors, with a notable representation from young voters and women.
In addition to financial support, the Harris campaign has also seen a surge in volunteer involvement. Nearly 200,000 volunteer shifts were signed up for during convention week, indicating a strong grassroots movement backing the vice president.
