SAN ANTONIO – Trainer Rick Nuñez and South Park Boxing Academy are facing a pleasant dilemma these days: the high demand for seats from boxing fans.
Once again, tickets for another fight night at the Shrine Auditorium have already sold out. But don’t worry, KSAT 12 has got you covered. Saturday’s fights will be streamed live starting at 7 p.m. on KSAT.com and the KSAT Plus app.
Headlining Saturday’s “Showdown at the Shrine” will be 19-year-old David “El Giro” Cardenas, a rising star from Edison High School. Cardenas (7-0, 5 KOs) will take on 22-year-old Jaime Guevara (2-2-1) of Laredo in an exciting six-round light flyweight bout.
Cardenas expressed his excitement for the upcoming fight and encouraged fans who couldn’t make it in person to tune in to the live stream. This will be Cardenas’ fourth fight in 2024, having turned pro just over a year ago.
South Park Boxing Academy and Triple A Promotions are expecting a crowd of nearly 3,000 fans at the Shrine, including Spurs player Keldon Johnson and his teammates. Johnson and Cardenas share a deep bond formed through their mutual love for the sport.
The undercard features Javier “El Indio” Fernandez, a Holmes High School alum, who will face Juan de la Cruz Rodriguez. Fernandez, who remained undefeated, shared his journey and gratitude for the support he received from his coach Rick Nuñez.
Another anticipated bout includes Von Ormy’s Richard “El Gayo” Medina, who is eager to showcase his skills against Luis Gerardo. Medina reflected on the importance of staying focused and following the training imparted by his coaches for a successful outcome.
With the buzz around the sellout crowd and the live stream on KSAT, excitement is in the air. Medina finds motivation in the electrifying environment and the opportunity to shine before a captive audience.
