Remembering Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr.: A Champion of the People
TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Democratic Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr., a 14-term incumbent and a fixture in his hometown of Paterson for more than four decades, passed away at the age of 87.
After a recent struggle with illness, Pascrell passed away on Wednesday morning at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey. His long-time chief of staff, Ben Rich, confirmed the news.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning,” a statement posted on Pascrell’s X account said. “Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved.”
Pascrell was known for his commitment to public service and was set to run for a 15th term in the coming fall.
Throughout his career, Pascrell was a strong advocate for emergency responders and played a key role in securing funding for fire departments nationwide through the Firefighter Investment and Response Enhancement Act.
His efforts also led to the recognition of the Great Falls as a national historical park, symbolizing the city of Paterson’s industrial past. The Great Falls was a source of pride for Pascrell, who used its image on his office’s letterhead.
A lifelong resident of Paterson, Pascrell’s dedication to public service began early in his career, serving as a teacher and later as mayor before his successful run for Congress.
Governor Phil Murphy fondly remembered Pascrell as a champion for the people and a true representative of New Jersey’s diversity.
