Introducing Black Crossword: A Fresh Approach to Puzzles
Are you tired of the same old crossword puzzles that don’t resonate with your interests? Well, Juliana Pache felt the same way a few years ago. When she couldn’t find crossword puzzles that reflected her passion for Black history and culture, she decided to create her own.
In January 2023, blackcrossword.com was born – a website offering free mini-crossword puzzles every day. And now, Pache has released her first book, “Black Crossword: 100 Mini Puzzles Celebrating the African Diaspora.”
With a focus on inclusivity and diversity, Pache’s puzzles include clues and answers related to various aspects of Black cultures from around the world. The tagline on her site reads, “If you know, you know.”
Each puzzle in the book is carefully crafted to represent the vibrancy and richness of Black communities and cultures. Pache’s goal is not only to entertain but also to educate and celebrate the diversity within the African diaspora.
Furthermore, Pache’s initiative is part of a broader movement to make crossword puzzles more accessible and representative. Efforts are being made to include a wider array of references and voices in the puzzle-making process.
Overall, Pache’s Black Crossword project is a testament to the power of representation and the joy of learning through play. As Pera-McGhee aptly puts it, “It’s kind of enriching to have things in the puzzle that you don’t know about. Both are kind of good in the crossword-solving experience.”
