SAN ANTONIO – Lamar Elementary may be empty now, but for the Gabrielson family, the school holds a wealth of cherished memories.
“It was everything,” shared parent Neil Gabrielson. “It was a central part of our lives. The staff was extremely caring.”
Gabrielson’s daughters now attend a different school after Lamar Elementary was one of 15 schools closed by San Antonio ISD in the previous school year as part of its rightsizing plan.
“We understand the district is facing budget challenges,” noted Gabrielson. “And perhaps, some management issues as well.”

In a video shared by SAISD in November 2023, Superintendent Jaime Aquino explained that rightsizing enables the district to assess its resources more closely.
“This inequity extended far beyond financial matters,” Aquino emphasized.
Records show Aquino visited various districts nationwide months before the school closures announcement to study their approaches to school shut down.
