Welcome Back to School: Tips for Children with Autism
SAN ANTONIO – The first few weeks of school can be exciting for children and their families, but they can also cause anxiety for some.
The new sights, sounds, smells, and faces can be overwhelming for children with autism, according to Carrie Alvarado, COO of Autism Community Network. This nonprofit helps families with children as young as 6 months old by providing diagnosis, support, and therapies.
Alvarado advises parents to manage their emotions as their anxiety could transfer to their child.
She recommends parents to prepare their children for the transition by taking a school tour in advance. Get to know the staff and teachers, and inform them about your child’s needs and motivations.
Alvarado highlights the crucial role of parents as advocates for their children. She encourages parents to trust their instincts and remember that they know their child best.
“The more parents can familiarize themselves with the teacher and establish a partnership with the school, the more at ease they will be, which will benefit the child,” Alvarado said.
