Tragic Loss of a Hero: Georgia Sheriff’s Deputy Killed in Ambush
A Georgia sheriff’s deputy, Brandon Cunningham, 30, was shot and killed while responding to a reported domestic dispute in Hiram, Georgia. The incident was described as an ambush on officers by a suspect who ultimately took his own life.
According to Major Ashley Henson of the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, two deputies responded to the call and were immediately fired upon from a home in a subdivision in Hiram. The suspect also fired at other officers but only one was shot.
Sheriff Gary Gulledge confirmed Cunningham’s death and stated, “Tonight, we’ve lost a hero.” The suspect, who remains unidentified, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A woman involved in the dispute was also shot and transported to a hospital in stable condition. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will oversee the investigation in the community about 27 miles northwest of Atlanta.
Henson called the shooting a “tremendously tragic situation,” emphasizing the unprecedented loss for the sheriff’s office. He expressed heartache and tears within the department.
