KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a dazzling display of skill, Patrick Mahomes amazed spectators with a behind-the-back pass to tight end Travis Kelce during the Kansas City Chiefs’ preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday.
Mahomes, under pressure from Detroit defensive lineman Josh Paschal, rolled to his right before unleashing the pass behind his back to a waiting Kelce. The completion on third-and-3 at the Detroit 33 resulted in a first down and set up a field goal for the Chiefs.
While Mahomes has experimented with behind-the-back throws in practice, this was the first time he successfully executed one during a game.
The video of the pass quickly went viral, with even Jason Kelce, Travis’ brother and retired Eagles center, expressing his amazement on Twitter: “The son of a gun actually did it!”
Known for his daring throws, Mahomes has a reputation for pulling off remarkable plays during games, from no-look throws to passes while parallel to the ground under pressure.
“That was unnecessary, but beautiful!” tweeted Quinton Lucas, the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, in response to Mahomes’ trickery.
