Former President Donald Trump once famously said, “drill, baby, drill,” and it seems Texas has taken that message to heart. With Texas supplying a whopping 42% of the nation’s oil in 2023, the state has cemented itself as a powerhouse in energy production. Setting new records year after year, Texas drilled nearly 2 billion barrels of oil and 12 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in 2023.

The U.S. as a whole has seen a surge in oil and gas production, with a current output of 12.9 million barrels of oil per day. Surpassing the previous record of 12.3 million barrels per day in 2019, the Energy Information Administration projects that production will continue to rise.

With no other country coming close to matching U.S. production levels, Texas remains at the forefront of the industry. The Permian Basin, a vast expanse straddling Texas and New Mexico, is the epicenter of this oil boom. A hotbed of drilling activity, the region is dominated by energy giants like Chevron, ExxonMobil, and ConocoPhillips.

Technological advancements such as fracking and horizontal drilling have revolutionized the industry, allowing companies to extract oil more efficiently. However, challenges like excess natural gas production and infrastructure limitations pose hurdles to further growth.

While policy changes can impact the industry, ultimately, it is supply and demand that drive oil and gas production. The market dictates production levels, with companies adapting to meet consumer needs.

The future of Texas oil production looks promising, with continued investment in technology and workforce development. So as Texas continues to drill record amounts of oil, one thing is clear – the Lone Star State remains a vital player in powering the nation’s energy demands.
