Google Reports Iranian Group Attempted to Hack Emails of Biden and Trump Associates
In a recent report, Google revealed that an Iranian group associated with the country’s Revolutionary Guard has been trying to infiltrate the personal email accounts of around a dozen individuals linked to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump since May. These individuals include current and former government officials, as well as presidential campaign affiliates.
The group’s targets also extend to Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently replaced Biden as the Democratic candidate. Google’s Threat Analysis Group confirmed that the Iranian group is actively pursuing these individuals and has been using tactics such as email credential phishing to gain access to their accounts.
This new revelation from Google comes on the heels of a Microsoft report that outlined suspected Iranian cyber intrusion in the 2020 U.S. presidential election. The mounting efforts from foreign adversaries to disrupt the election process have raised concerns among security experts and government officials.
While both Google and Microsoft have not specified Iran’s intentions in the U.S. presidential race, U.S. officials have hinted that Iran may have a specific interest in countering former President Trump’s policies. The ongoing cyber intrusions and hacking incidents highlight the complex web of international relations and cybersecurity threats that continue to evolve in the digital age.
