Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner Emerges as Democratic Candidate to Succeed Sheila Jackson Lee

Washington — In a tight race, former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has been selected by Harris County Democrats as the Democratic candidate to fill the seat left vacant by the passing of U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.
Turner secured 41 votes in a committee vote held by party officials, narrowly beating out former Houston City Council member Amanda Edwards, who came in second with 37 votes. The 18th district, heavily Democratic, sets Turner up as the favorite to win the general election in November.
The selection of the candidate was necessary due to Jackson Lee’s passing too close to the general election for another primary to be conducted. Jackson Lee, who succumbed to pancreatic cancer last month, had previously won the Democratic primary for the seat against Edwards in March.
Turner, a former member of the Texas House, served as Houston mayor from 2016 until January. He received the endorsement of Jackson Lee’s children, positioning him as the candidate most knowledgeable about vital projects requiring federal funding. Turner highlights his service on the House Appropriations Committee in the Texas Legislature, emphasizing his ability to advocate for local priorities.
As mayor, Turner led Houston through various crises, including Hurricane Harvey, the COVID-19 pandemic, and Winter Storm Uri. His successful efforts to secure additional funding for disaster response, such as $50 million from Gov. Greg Abbott post-Hurricane Harvey, showcase his dedication to the city and its residents.
Edwards, the runner-up, is a former at-large member of the Houston City Council, known for championing small businesses and workers’ rights. Her experience in public service underscores her commitment to community empowerment and economic growth.
The upcoming general election in November will see Turner squaring off against Republican Lana Centonze. Aside from this election, a special election is set for the same day to fill Jackson Lee’s seat for the remainder of her term, with her daughter, Erica Lee Carter, announcing her candidacy.
