Israel in Disarray: Netanyahu Clashes with Defense Minister Over Handling of Conflict
JERUSALEM – Tensions are rising in Israel as a rift between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant is laid bare, exposing dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s handling of the ongoing conflict.
After a recent blast in Tehran claimed the life of Hamas’ leader – an incident attributed to Israel – the country is on edge, bracing for potential Iranian retaliation. Additionally, negotiations for a new cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hamas are set to commence later this week.
Reports from Israeli media indicated that Gallant openly criticized Netanyahu’s repetitive rhetoric of “total victory” during the ongoing conflict in Gaza, highlighting a lack of clear strategic goals and post-war planning. The disagreement between the two officials has escalated, with Gallant’s remarks being leaked to the media.
In response to Gallant’s comments, Netanyahu deflected by suggesting that the Defense Minister should focus his criticism on Hamas instead. The public feud underscores the internal divisions within the Israeli government regarding the conflict’s management.
Gallant, a member of Netanyahu’s Likud party, has previously clashed with the Prime Minister over policy matters, further exacerbating tensions within the ruling coalition. Despite the escalating discord, Netanyahu is reportedly not considering Gallant’s dismissal at this time.
As one of the remaining moderate voices in Netanyahu’s government following the exit of centrist Benny Gantz earlier this year, Gallant’s position is crucial in maintaining a semblance of unity within the coalition.
