The Legal Battle Between Dearica Hamby and the WNBA

Dearica Hamby, an All-Star player for the Los Angeles Sparks, has taken legal action against the WNBA and her former team, the Las Vegas Aces, citing mistreatment during her pregnancy. This lawsuit, filed in federal court, accuses the Aces of discrimination and retaliation against Hamby, which ultimately led to her trade to the Sparks in January 2023.

While the WNBA is currently reviewing the complaint, the Aces have not yet responded to requests for comment. However, both the club and coach Becky Hammon have previously denied the allegations, stating that the trade was a strategic move to create space for other players, including Candace Parker.

Despite the investigations and suspension that followed Hamby’s initial claims, she remains adamant that the league’s response was inadequate. Her attorneys emphasize that federal laws protect pregnant women from discrimination in the workplace, and they believe that the treatment Hamby faced sets a concerning precedent for other women in the league.

Having played for the Aces (formerly the Stars) from 2015-2022, Hamby has been a standout performer, earning accolades such as Sixth Player of the Year and multiple All-Star selections. This season, she is posting career-high numbers in points and rebounds, showcasing her continued dedication to the sport.

This legal battle is just one of the off-court issues facing the Aces, as they are currently under investigation for a sponsorship deal that has raised questions about player compensation. As the case unfolds, it raises important discussions about equality and fair treatment within the WNBA.
