COPENHAGEN – Sweden has officially closed its investigation into a backstage incident during the Eurovision Song Contest involving Dutch contestant Joost Klein, who was expelled from the competition just hours before the final.
Klein, a fan favorite, was removed from the competition due to a complaint by a female member of the production crew. The Swedish Prosecution Authority stated that the investigation found Klein had made a movement that accidentally hit the woman’s film camera, and there was no evidence of any intention to cause harm or fear.
The 26-year-old artist, known for his song “Europapa,” which celebrates diversity and honors his late parents, was a top contender before his disqualification, marking an unprecedented event in Eurovision history.
Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS expressed shock at the decision, as Eurovision fans and participants alike were caught off guard by the last-minute expulsion of a strong competitor.
