LE BOURGET – Janja Garnbret and Brooke Raboutou shared tears of joy as they embraced after the boulder and lead sport climbing final at the Paris Games on Saturday.
Garnbret solidified her position as one of the top stars in the sport by successfully defending her Olympic title. Raboutou made history by securing the first climbing Olympic medal for the U.S. women’s team.
Garnbret, the Slovenian sensation who won the combined gold at the Tokyo Games three years ago when sport climbing made its Olympic debut, outperformed Raboutou to clinch the gold on the final climb in Le Bourget.
In other results, Leonardo Veddriq of Indonesia claimed the speed gold, and Toby Roberts of Great Britain secured the men’s gold in lead and boulder. Aleksandra Miroslaw of Poland emerged victorious in the women’s speed event earlier in the week.
Garnbret’s remarkable success in climbing has not only earned her numerous international titles but also recognition for her advocacy in combatting eating disorders within the sport.
Despite overcoming a toe injury last year that temporarily sidelined her, Garnbret’s dedication and talent have solidified her status as a climbing icon.
