In a shocking turn of events, clashes between two heavily armed militia groups in Libya’s capital have left about a dozen people dead, causing terror among residents and highlighting the ongoing violence in the region.
The violent confrontations took place in Tripoli’s eastern neighborhood of Tajoura, involving the Rahba al-Duruae militia led by warlord Bashir Khalfallah, known as al-Baqrah, and another militia known as al-Shahida Sabriya.
According to reports, the clashes were triggered by an attempted assassination of al-Baqrah, allegedly carried out by al-Shahida Sabriya. This incident led to a deadly escalation of violence that claimed multiple lives and left several others injured.
The warring factions are reportedly aligned with Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah’s government, further complicating the already precarious situation in the war-torn country.
The recent violence in Libya underscores the challenges faced by the nation since the civil war that followed the 2011 uprising. With rival administrations and numerous armed groups vying for control, Libya remains deeply divided and unstable.
As tensions escalate, concerns are rising about the potential for a new conflict between East and West Libya, with fears that the fragile ceasefire established in 2020 could be in jeopardy.
International bodies, including the United Nations and Western embassies, have voiced their apprehensions about the escalating military movements and called for restraint to prevent further bloodshed.
The situation in Libya remains volatile, with the specter of all-out war looming large over the embattled nation.
