NEW YORK – At just 16 years old, Iva Jovic from California made history at the U.S. Open by becoming the youngest American to win a women’s main-draw match since 2000. She defeated 2023 Australian Open semifinalist Magda Linette of Poland with a score of 6-4, 6-3 on Monday.

Reflecting on her victory, Jovic said, “Surprised, but not surprised,” highlighting her confidence and preparation for the match against a seasoned opponent.

Jovic’s passion for tennis has been evident since a young age when she began learning the sport with her sister on makeshift courts in their California neighborhood. Despite her young age, she has already achieved remarkable success, including winning the U.S. Tennis Association Girls’ 18s national championship, earning her a wild-card entry into the U.S. Open.

Having also excelled in doubles competitions, Jovic’s dedication and talent have been recognized on an international level. Her favorite players, Novak Djokovic and Belinda Bencic, inspire her to continue honing her skills and aiming for greatness in the sport.

Despite her rapid rise in the tennis world, Jovic remains humble and focused on her goals. She cherishes the opportunity to compete alongside her role models and is determined to keep improving with each match.
